Local Area History
History of Los Banos
Los Banos has a great history! Back before the times of the Padres and their missions- there were the Yokut tribe of Indians. There was a Franciscan monk by the name of Padre Filipe Arroya living at the Mission San Juan Bautista from between 1808-1833- and he, we think, is the one who named our town Los Banos (the Baths). But you know- this water is very cold - and it is difficult to find anyone taking a bath in that cold water.

The gold miners from around the area shortened the name of "Los Banos del Padre Arroyo" to the "Los Banos Crick".

The town was founded as a company town by the cattle baron Henry Miller in the 1860's. Henry Miller drained the marshlands and put cattle on the land. Henry Miller and Charles Lux made a partnership in cattle ranching and sheep ranching in this valley.

Miller made the Canal Farm Inn his headquarters. This area is still standing as a local restaurant and motel. We also have the Miller and Lux building which is located down town on 6th street across from the Bank of America. Check out these beautiful buildings one day- they don't make them like that anymore.

May Days are held in Los Banos because of Henry Miller. Every May 1st he would have one of his picnics, with a BBQ and visiting with everyone. Los Banos still keeps this tradition going with the May Day Fair at the fairgrounds. During May Day there is still a famous parade: animals, children, fancy floats, school bands, fancy rigs and hotrod cars. You can just about find everything in the May Day Parade.
